Cosmic-Ray Tomography for Border Security

چکیده

A key task for customs workers is the interception of hazardous, illegal and counterfeit items in order to protect health safety citizens. However, it estimated that only a small fraction cargo inspected an even smaller trafficked goods are detected. Today, most widely used technology scanning vehicles, ranging from vans trucks railcars, γ ray X-ray radiography. New technologies required overcome current technological shortcomings, such as inability detect target material composition, usage harmful ionising radiation sources resultant low throughput. Cosmic tomography (CRT) promising screening. muons have average energies around 10,000 times larger than typical therefore can penetrate relatively large dense materials. By analysing muon scattering, possible identify materials hidden inside shielding too thick or deep other imaging methods. CRT also completely passive, exploiting naturally occurring secondary cosmic radiation, safe humans animals. Contrary conventional X-ray- γ-ray-based techniques, allows differentiation anomaly localisation within vehicle through provision 3D images. This article reviews state-of-the-art CRT, critically assessing strengths weaknesses method, suggesting further directions development.

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Analytic Forms of Cosmic Ray Spectra Suitable for Muon Tomography

Performance characteristics of different approaches to muon tomography depend critically on the nature of the targets to be imaged and the flux of cosmic ray muons available at the site to be studied. To a reasonable approximation, the zenith angle θ and muon energy or momentum pμ dependences of the flux are similar at all potential tomography sites but the total muon flux does depend on site e...

Cosmic Ray Antiprotons

Interstellar (IS) cosmic rays consist mainly of protons with a smaller admixture of heavier nuclei. Antiprotons (p’s) occur at an abundance of 10 of p’s. These energetic particles, kinetic energy K > 10 MeV, are Galactic in origin, not to be confused with the much denser solar wind plasma, with much lower K. The relative element abundances in cosmic rays (CRs) indicate that CR primaries are ion...
